Many of us have ambitions and dreams that we never seem to act upon, there's always something that gets in the way of making a start. So here you are again, seeing out the old year, along with its broken promises and failed, good intentions. Fresh with newly found conviction, you arrive at the New Year's resolution, an annual triumph of hope over reality! Hope, that this time you will have the single mindedness to succeed, where last time you failed. So what's going to make the difference this time?

People with depression may find even the smallest task to be a huge obstacle that it keeps them from acting on things they need to discuss or work on. Too many times, moving forward in life poses a challenge and requires discomfort. Most people go through periods of adjustment during transition from middle school to high school to college, or from one job to another. But depression can make these situations a tougher time to cope with. This doesn't mean that they are less capable than anyone else. It's their lack of confidence or the talent for imagining worst case scenario that make it hard for them to face the realities of life.

Much of what we say and do is called 'constructive criticism.' This means I tell you something supposedly for 'your own good.' What actually happens is that I judge what you do and say based on 'should' then I tell you how to 'do it right.' In other words, criticism is destructive and leads people to feelings of inadequacy: love and acceptance lead to feelings of self-worth. Remember: the most important task you have is loving and accepting yourself.

Having a low self esteem can arise for many and complex reasons, and different causes may need different remedies. However, there are some common themes among those who suffer from a lack of self esteem, and along them come some partial solutions which, when brought together, may help you to start increasing your self regard. Once you start that process, it can then become a easier task to end your low self esteem altogether.

In that case you might have to take it slow, so why not start with one or two of the simple relaxation techniques?
